INSIDE THE MIND OF AN ARTIST Episode #2

Lauren Mantecon interviews Brian C. O’Malley

Painting by Brian : Old World Erupts, oil, acrylic, and gesso on 2 wood panels, 48"x48", 2017

Brian O'Malley has a prolific career as an artist. He is an interdisciplinary artist who maintains a studio in Greenville, RI. Brian has exhibited his paintings and drawings nationally and is recognized internationally for his animations.

In this in-depth interview, Brian and I begin by discussing his favorite artists and how they have influenced his large body of work. We cover artists in the neo-expressionistic style of painting like Adrian Gheni and Max Ernst.

We cover a bit of art history, different art techniques, and his experience working in other mediums like sculpture, installation, and animation. And, how one approaches interdisciplinary work, collaboration as well as, curatorial work.

Brian shares with us the power and meaning behind some of his works like his recent animated film: Here and Beyond; Requiem for 2020.

(The video illustrates) what breath means as a metaphor during covid. An homage, the birch tree which, represents life and mushroom polypore that are living off the tree. The birch tree has symbolic power. The energy contained within the tree has its life cycle. It is decomposing. The figure (at the end) is a reference to the people who did not have a voice during this time of covid.

Pull up a seat and take a listen as we dive deeper into this 58-minute video.
