The Perception of Upside Down and Backwards
Greetings,
A question I have been mulling over recently is this; what exactly is the difference between perception and perspective?
When we change our view (perspective) we can change our minds (perception).
I have been thinking about this for a few reasons. One, my curiosity on how we as a culture in the United States can seem so alike yet be so different. Two, how do our perspective and perception differ in mentoring those wanting or struggling with their entry into the portals of ‘creativity’.
Maybe the entrance point needs to come from somewhere upside down and backwards. Perception definition; taking life in from our five senses in order to understand.
For instance I have always seen things a little backwards. Literally.
I grew up viewing letters on a page, numbers, and movements in my physical world with a slightly different “perspective”. Backwards.
I never knew this was a problem.
Outsiders get to view and witness my wheels turning in a slightly different direction, different from their way of understanding what was right in front of them.
The good news ?
An added “superpower,” or the alternative route to the word ”Cope”.
I remember the gentle coaxing of my grandfather when I was seven when he witnessed my struggle in “ why it was” those imagined people up on the moon were not looking down on me as I was looking up at them.
He chuckled lightly as he pulled out two pillows and placed them on either side of our family living room. He instructed that I lie down with my feet on a pillow while he did the same on the other end of the room. Now “look up” he said. There we were gazing up at each other. Ah ha…
I suppose my unique perception is what led me to painting. I could live inside my abstract world and give it back to you in a quantum whole.
We all have that unique gift of something inside us; our weaknesses becoming a strength.
How we do something just a little bit different from the rest.
Go ahead,
name a few of yours, I love to hear stories.
And as poet Mark Nepo says, to sum this up:
“ First is to see things as they are”
“Then to meet them as they are ”
